The Program
Hope for struggling readers
Since 2012, Horse Powered Reading® has been giving hope to struggling readers by offering equine assisted services and training for students, teachers and equine professionals around the world.
Our program helps children increase confidence, promote self-efficacy, foster connections, learn valuable reading skills and carry new skills into the regular classroom. Through the use of horses, children engage in activities and games that promote phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
Major's Place is a certified Horse Powered Reading® facilitator.
How It Works
Reading with mind, body and emotion
Horse Powered Reading® integrates social-emotional learning with academics, allowing students to see and experience reading with their entire mind, body and emotions by creating metaphors for the skills involved in reading.
Students interact with horses from the ground, using toys and props to identify obstacles and learn five critical reading skills: phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension.
* Session goals vary depending upon the needs of the individual or group.
