Soft Landings Program: Where Horse Retirement Becomes a New Beginning
For many horses, retirement marks the end of a career.
At Major's Place, we believe it can be the beginning of something extraordinary.
Our Soft Landings Program provides senior and retired horses with a purposeful second chapter—one built on compassion, dignity, and connection. These remarkable horses have spent their lives giving to people. Whether they worked on ranches, carried riders down trails, competed in the show ring, or simply served as faithful companions, they deserve a retirement filled with respect, excellent care, and opportunities to continue enriching lives on their own terms.
Retirement Doesn't Mean Life Without Purpose
Just as people often find fulfillment through meaningful relationships and community after retirement, many horses continue to thrive when they are given opportunities that match their changing physical abilities.
At Major's Place, our programs are entirely ground-based. There is no riding, no pressure to perform, and no expectation that a horse will do more than they are comfortable doing. Instead, our equine partners simply get to be horses.
Their quiet presence, curiosity, wisdom, and emotional awareness become powerful teachers for the individuals and families we serve.
Every Horse is an Individual
No two horses age the same way.
Some remain energetic well into their twenties, while others require additional support, specialized nutrition, or carefully managed activity. Every horse in our Soft Landings Program receives individualized care based on their unique physical and emotional needs.
This includes:
Individualized feeding and supplement plans
Routine veterinary, dental, and farrier care
Daily turnout with compatible herd mates
Comfortable shelter and ample natural forage
Ongoing monitoring of workload, mobility, and overall well-being
The freedom to opt out of interactions whenever needed
Our horses are never viewed as equipment or tools. They are respected partners whose welfare guides every decision we make.
A Purposeful Second Career
One of the greatest examples of our Soft Landings Program is Cash.
After retiring from ranch work, Cash was generously donated to Major's Place to begin a new chapter. While his days of demanding physical work are behind him, his calm nature, life experience, and steady presence now help create meaningful moments of healing and personal growth for others.
His story reminds us that purpose doesn't disappear with age—it simply evolves.
Many of our horses have found similar second careers, where their wisdom matters far more than athletic ability.
Healing Happens on Both Ends of the Lead Rope
The beauty of the Soft Landings Program is that everyone benefits.
Participants experience authentic connection with horses whose life experiences often mirror their own journeys through change, loss, resilience, and new beginnings.
At the same time, our horses receive loving care, thoughtful management, and lives filled with enrichment, companionship, and purpose.
It's a relationship built on mutual respect—not one-sided service.
Because Every Horse Deserves a Soft Landing
At Major's Place, we believe retirement should never mean being forgotten.
It should mean safety.
Comfort.
Purpose.
And the opportunity to continue making a difference in a way that honors the horse's well-being above all else.
Our Soft Landings Program reflects our commitment to giving deserving horses the retirement they have earned while creating powerful opportunities for healing within our community.
Because sometimes the most meaningful chapters are the ones we never expected.
And every great horse deserves a soft landing.
